Spring Cleaning

Now that spring has finally sprung and I’ve finished study until next year, I can get stuck into spring cleaning. I’m not sure if anyone has ever researched this urge some of us get while we are also fighting off hay fever, but it certainly grips me every year at about the same time the pollen attacks.

I started in my bedroom. Out came the clothes I haven’t worn in more than a year. Then I sorted the jewellery, some of it dating back to my high school days. In the process I found the precious first teeth my sons had lost so many years ago. Shame I didn’t sort them into which teeth belonged to which son! I had some issues when it came to hats. I rarely wear hats, but I do like the ones I have. I even have a black beret that used to be my mothers. The hats went back into my wardrobe.

By the end of the day I had a garbage bag full of clothes to give away, a stack of jewellery and handbags to sell on eBay and I’d torn my favorite jeans. I’d also discovered a pair of brand new court shoes that I have had for over a year but never worn because they suddenly shrunk a size when I got them home. So as I’m sitting here typing, I’m also wearing the court shoes over a pair of tennis socks after spraying them with leather stretcher in the hope they might become comfortable.

Today I will go through the various study books, papers and odd bits and pieces that get thrown in a corner of my room. I really need another bookcase to stack things in. I also plan to tackle the hall and bathroom cupboards. I’m sure there are things in there I simply don’t need any more.

There is something very satisfying about spring cleaning. It can be a spiritual affair. I love the end of a day of cleaning when you can sit back, exhausted, and admire your work.

Speaking of spring cleaning, our old boss left last week and our new one starts this week. In the few meetings we have had with him it looks like he will be a vast improvement for our department. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this isn’t just the “honeymoon period”, but the light at the end of the tunnel is certainly burning a hell of a lot brighter than it did before. In fact, I’m actually looking forward to work tomorrow.

I’ve just found a new favorite quote:

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” Maria Robinson

  1. I wouldn't know about spring cleaning, as I am way too lazy 90% of the time to do any.
But it sounds like you not only made room in the house, you made room emotionally too. Glad you are having a better time at work.

  2. Domestic I am way too lazy too! Thats why it only gets done once a year, or when I move.

  3. I often get this urge when I begin tripping over shoes and spend much time looking for misplaced items. When I was pregnant, my sister called that irresistible cleaning urge, "nesting." However, what do you call it when your last child was born 7 years ago and you have no intention of having any more kids? :D

Good luck with the shoes, really good post.

  4. I'm jealous that it's spring!

My favorite part of cleaning is just as you said. When I'm sitting, having a cup, admiring my awesome work. Lovely!

  5. Lol. This threw me for a bit because I forgot your seasons are opposite ours here in the states. Pollen? We have snow on the ground!

I live cleaning things out and getting a fresh start.

  6. I love, love, love having a clear out. We have visitors here so that prompted me to have a big of a fall cleanup and I loved getting my pantry in order and the playroom all spick and span. It is funny thinking of spring where you are as the weather finally turns cold here.

  8. You should come clean my house next. :) I'm in the middle of deep cleaning also. We are hosting a Thanksgiving party here. Getting started is the worst. I decided yesterday that I want a housekeeper.

  9. I keep thinking I'm going to start but somehow cannot motivate myself one little bit. I'm convinced its because I have so much stuff on the TIVO that I need watch before it gets deleted.

  11. It feels so good to pare down and get rid of some stuff. I love to do that every once in a while.

  13. Chary - I'm not sure what you call it when you've finished "nesting"! The shoes are still tight... sigh...

Deborah - I'm happy we had a few days of spring, we seem to be teetering between spring and winter now.

Kazzy - thank goodness we don't have snow! However since I wrote this post we have had so much rain its flooded in places.

Aging Mommy - I have yet to attack the pantry, but that will come!

Rose - I hope next time you do the spring cleaning you will take it easy too!

Summer - I might come and clean if you pay the airfare ! :-) Hope your party was excellent.

Mrs Tuna - LOL! Thanks for putting a smile on my face!

nanny - When I can't work out how to start I pull everything out of the closet and leave it on the floor - that way I have to do something about it!

Kristy - Yes, its the feel good bit I love about cleaning.

Robyn - Thank you! Happy holiday season to you too!

  14. Problem is, I am totally ruthless when it comes to cleaning out cupboards and chuck stuff away without even really thinking about it. And then I always regret it. I need a bit more of the hoarder about me, but then that brings other problems!
